Racing Towards a More Sustainable Future

F1® Las Vegas
04.03.2025 LV Grand Prix

This Earth Month, we’re celebrating a significant sustainability milestone: Grand Prix Plaza, home of the FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX, was recently awarded LEED Silver® certification for new construction by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This recognition highlights the efforts of the Las Vegas Grand Prix to integrate sustainability into the design and operation of the 39-acre complex.

Key Sustainability Features

The certification reflects Grand Prix Plaza’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact in three main areas:

  1. Location and Transportation – Located near the Las Vegas Strip, Grand Prix Plaza encourages visitors to use sustainable transportation options such as the zero-emissions Las Vegas Monorail, rideshare services, and pedestrian pathways. These choices help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
  2. Water Efficiency – Given Nevada’s dry climate, water conservation is a priority. Grand Prix Plaza incorporates drought-tolerant landscaping, mechanical cooling systems, and high-efficiency fixtures to minimize water use.
  3. Sustainable Design and Operations – Grand Prix Plaza also implements strategies for site management, green cleaning, and social equity within its project team. These efforts contribute to a lower environmental footprint while maintaining a functional and accessible space.

Commitment to Sustainability

Beyond LEED certification, Las Vegas Grand Prix has introduced additional sustainability initiatives such as recycling, food recovery and low-emission temporary power. After the 2024 race, more than 171,000 pounds of food and beverage items were donated to local food banks to address food insecurity and an additional 75,000 pounds of food scraps were recycled, further reducing waste and supporting the local community.

In partnership with MGM Resorts and the Southern Nevada Water Authority, a first-of-its-kind Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) was developed to capture water that would otherwise evaporate from an MGM Grand cooling tower. This system produces enough water each year to offset Grand Prix Plaza’s annual consumptive water use, making it a net-zero consumptive water use facility.

Achieving LEED Silver® certification and implementing sustainable practices reinforces Las Vegas Grand Prix, Inc.’s focus on reducing its environmental impact while delivering world-class entertainment. These efforts align with the broader sustainability strategy of Formula 1 to reduce its environmental footprint and ensure that the sport moves toward a more sustainable future.
